This course can answer the oldest question in math class without dodging. Compound interest is an exponential function wearing dollar signs — the mathematics of every savings account, student loan, and credit card statement you will ever hold, and Your Financial Future hands it to you with your own name on it. Anything that cycles — tides, daylight, a heartbeat, the seat of a Ferris wheel — is a sinusoidal function waiting for its parameters, which is what The Tide Problem rehearses. And anything that doubles — populations, rumours, debts left alone — grows the way Double or Nothing makes visceral.
The second answer is about transfer: you may never state the domain of a function after June, but you will spend a lifetime modelling messy situations, checking claims before trusting them, and arguing from constraints. That training happens here whether the algebra resurfaces or not.
Questions worth arguing about:
- “When will I use this?” is sometimes an honest question and sometimes code for something else — frustration, being lost, a fair complaint. How could a classmate tell which they just heard?
- A bank never shows you the exponential function inside your loan, yet it is in there compounding. Who benefits when the people signing cannot read the mathematics they are signing?
- List three quantities from your own week that repeat on a cycle — secretly sinusoidal. Whose job is it to notice they are?
- Nobody asks a basketball player when they will use wind sprints. What is different about mathematics — or is anything?
- Suppose the honest answer for some topic really is “you, personally, may never use this directly”. Does the transfer answer rescue it, or is that a dodge too? Defend your position.
